Ruins of one of the largest medieval castle fortresses in the Meuse valley (13th c., 5 towers, a 54.5m well), on a cliff above the river — free-roam ruins plus wide valley views. Open weekends Apr–Jun/Sep–Nov, daily in peak season; ~€2.

A well-documented 14.5km loop from Yvoir centre up to the Poilvache ruins and back, ~400m of elevation gain — part of the long-distance GR126 (Brussels–Dinant–Semois). · Difficulty: moderate

17th-century château around a courtyard, with 300-year-old orange trees, fountains and lime-tree avenues — one of Belgium's most celebrated gardens, owned by the same family since the 15th century.

Widely considered Belgium's best rock-climbing site: limestone cliffs up to 120m across 7 main rock masses, roughly 600 routes from grade 2 to 8c. Access is via Club Alpin Belge membership.

13th–16th c. feudal castle — one of the few in Belgium with a genuine working drawbridge and water-filled moat. The donjon dates to 1266–1284; remodelled again in the 19th century. Visits and markets run on an event calendar rather than fixed daily hours.

The oldest working water mill in Wallonia, restored and run by a local association — a short guided visit shows the milling mechanism in motion.

Belgium's only tourist-developed river island (since 1937), reached by a small ferry. Half is a Natura-2000 nature park; the other half has a paddling pool, playground, beach and brewery terrace — a relaxed family afternoon by the Meuse.

Kayak, pedalo, SUP and self-drive boat rental from the Île d'Yvoir dock. In July–August a volunteer collective also runs free kayak/paddle sessions on a calm side-arm of the Meuse at nearby Godinne on Sunday afternoons.

A genuine climbing crag right inside Yvoir village: roughly 130 bolted routes on south-facing limestone slabs up to 55m, mostly grades 4–5 — approachable for beginners and intermediates, and sheltered from wind.

Flat, car-free riverside cycling path along the Meuse through Yvoir, Godinne, Houx and Anhée, part of the international EuroVelo 19 network — easy enough for a lazy pedal, long enough for a brisker ride, and connects onward to the Molignée valley greenway at Anhée. · Difficulty: easy

Family-owned brewery since 1858, one of the last independent traditional Belgian brewers using bottle-refermentation. A notable local landmark, though the current facilities no longer offer public tours — worth a stop for the shop rather than a guided visit.

Active Benedictine abbey (founded 1872) with a neo-Gothic basilica, famous for its cheese-and-beer pairing. The visitor centre has a small cheese-making exhibit, a microbrewery visit, a hop field and tastings. Open daily.

The only gravity-fed water gardens of their kind in Belgium — cascades and fountains flow entirely without pumps, designed from 1758 blending French, English and Italian styles. A genuinely lovely, unhurried garden walk.

A castle first recorded in the 10th century, remodelled from 1896 by the Vaxelaire department-store family; today a working vineyard and winery with a restaurant, cellar tour and a small museum on the château's history.

One of Wallonia's officially 'Plus Beaux Villages' — a coherent limestone Condroz village anchored by a fortified 17th-century château-ferme. Several easy waymarked walking circuits start here, including one out to the ruins of Château de Montaigle. · Difficulty: easy

Another 'Plus Beaux Villages de Wallonie' member in the Molignée valley, with 18th-century Condroz architecture and a 17th-century tithe barn. The village walk is easy; the hilltop above ('la montagne de Sosoye') with its rare plant life is a steeper optional add-on. · Difficulty: easy

A dramatic ~40m free-standing limestone needle on the Meuse bank, said to have been split from the cliff by Louis XIV's troops to build a road. Tied to the legend of the Four Sons of Aymon; a simple roadside viewpoint, no walking required.

A fortress atop a 100m cliff over Dinant, on a site fortified since 1051 (current structure from 1818); reached by cable car or a steep stair climb, with sweeping views over the Meuse valley and a small museum inside.

A show cave discovered in 1904 during railway works: 650m of guided galleries through stalactites, stalagmites and calcite cascades across several named chambers. An easy, cool, ~45–60 minute tour.

A 13th-century Gothic collegiate church with its landmark pear-shaped bell tower, built after the original 10th-century Romanesque church collapsed in 1228 — an iconic silhouette against the citadel cliff behind it.

An interactive paid museum on the history of Leffe beer (brewed since 1240), tasting included — distinct from the working abbey itself, and fully open to the public daily.

The Premonstratensian abbey where Leffe beer originated, still home to a religious community. Unlike Maison Leffe, most of the site is cloistered — guided tours run only on summer weekend afternoons or by advance group booking.

A 50-hectare reserve in the lower Lesse valley: a 4km marked trail past Roman-era bath remains, medieval fortification traces, rock walls and several caves. Some rocky staircases along the way. Open daily Apr–Nov. · Difficulty: moderate

A fairy-tale pentagonal castle with six round towers, largely dating to around 1410, perched on a rocky spur — a little further out, but a genuinely popular regional castle worth the extra drive.

A 550-hectare provincial leisure park drawing half a million visitors a year: themed gardens, mini-golf, a panoramic train, greenhouses, a small farm and picnic areas. Noticeably further than everything else here — a deliberate 'worth the extra drive' pick, best explored by bike or the on-site train.

A heritage railway on the old 21km Ciney–Yvoir line, run by volunteers since 1992, with its depot at Spontin and stations at Dorinne-Durnal, Purnode and Bauche — three tunnels between Dorinne-Durnal and Purnode. Diesel locos and vintage railcars (steam ended in 2017). Weekends and school holidays, roughly April–September; the Fête du Rail is 15–16 August, with marked walks linking the stations.

The wooded valley the Bocq cuts through the Condroz on its way down to the Meuse — the nearest proper walking country to the house. Marked loops link Durnal, Spontin, Dorinne and Purnode, crossing the heritage railway and its viaducts more than once. · Difficulty: moderate

A tiny Condroz hamlet with an outsized 17th-century pilgrimage church, whose coffered ceiling holds around 145 painted panels. The fields around it were the furthest point the German advance reached in the Ardennes offensive over the winter of 1944–45, marked by a roadside monument.

One of the officially listed Plus Beaux Villages de Wallonie: limestone houses, stone roofs, and the Romanesque Collégiale Saint-Hadelin with its 11th-century crypt. A knocked-out King Tiger tank still sits at the village entrance, marking where the 1944 offensive stalled. Pairs naturally with Château de Vêves just up the road.

The counterpart to the Meuse RAVeL, heading inland instead of along the river: a flat, smooth-asphalt greenway on the old Ciney–Statte railway, running roughly 22km through Hamois and Havelange and on past Clavier, Modave and Pont de Bonne. Old station buildings along the way carry interpretation panels; at Huy it joins the Meuse RAVeL and EuroVelo 3. · Difficulty: easy

A moated 15th-century castle on the edge of the Famenne wetlands, with round towers reflected in its water. Beyond the period rooms it houses museums of rural life and of the Famenne's nature, and the marshy grounds behind it are set up as a wildlife reserve with observation hides.

A guided descent 60m under Rochefort into the Sabbat chamber, big enough to swallow a cathedral spire, ending with a hot-air balloon effect that shows off the void. Includes the Val d'Enfer museum on the karst research done here. Open roughly April to mid-November; it is 8°C down there, so bring a jacket and proper shoes. Only 300m from the town centre.

Belgium's space museum and astronaut-training centre: Moon and Mars exhibitions, a full-size shuttle mock-up, rotating chairs and moonwalk simulators. Almost entirely indoors, which makes it the obvious answer to a washed-out Ardennes afternoon.

The big one: a vast cave system carved by the Lesse, reached by tram and toured on foot, plus a 250-hectare wildlife park holding Europe's 'big five' — brown bear, wolf, bison, lynx and wolverine — seen from a safari car (~1h30) or on a 3km/6km walking trail (~3h). Budget most of a day; combined passes cover cave, park and treetop walk.

A 17th-century château on a 60m cliff above the Hoyoux, with lavish stuccoed state rooms and a huge wooded estate to walk. Its water wheel, built to lift river water up to the castle, was studied by the engineer behind the machine that fed Versailles' fountains. Reachable off the Ligne 126 greenway.

Two-Michelin-star caves in the Ourthe valley, discovered in 1958 and rated among Belgium's finest: a narrow chasm hung with delicate 'eccentrics' — mineral corkscrews that grow sideways in defiance of gravity. The guided tour is long and involves around 580 steps, so it is the most physical of the caves here. Ring ahead for departure times outside high summer. · Difficulty: moderate

Marketed as the smallest town in the world — a knot of cobbled lanes and grey-stone houses in a bend of the Ourthe below its castle. Above the river sits the Parc des Topiaires, some 250 clipped box, yew and holly figures, a few over 120 years old. Touristy in high season; go early or late.

An 11-hectare maize maze with roughly 6km of paths, re-cut to a new theme each year and staffed with performers along the route. Strictly summer-only — the maze exists just while the maize stands, so check it is running before setting off. Seven minutes on from Durbuy, so the two combine into one outing. · Difficulty: easy
